A federal judge in New York has appointed the Garretson Firm Resolution Group Inc. to process thousands of claims related to the 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center.
The Cincinnati-based firm was named as the “allocation neutral” for a $700 million settlement fund. The money will be paid out to more than 10,000 claimants who allege injuries from the rescue, recovery and debris removal operations at the World Trade Center site that was destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
As allocation neutral, or special master, Garretson will be responsible for reviewing medical and other supporting information submitted by the claimants and determining each individual’s final settlement amount based on pre-established criteria. The firm will also ensure that the administration of the settlement meets all terms and requirements of the settlement process agreement, according to a press release issued by the firm.
The amounts awarded can range up to about $1.5 million for claimants who died as a result of the 9/11 operations. Plaintiffs who have no qualifying injury, but have a legal claim for fear of becoming sick, will receive $3,250, it said. Garretson has made a significant investment in time and resources in the infrastructure needed to support the settlement program, it said.
Cincinnati lawyer Matt Garretson founded the Garretson Law Firm LLC in 1998 and developed a specialty around lawsuit settlements. Garretson Firm Resolution Group Inc. was incorporated in 2007.
